What is Traditional Style?
Traditional style is sophisticated and classic. But don’t confuse Traditional with old fashioned! Today’s Traditional style is pared down with plenty of touches of modern comfort! Traditional style relies on timeless types of furniture like Sheraton or English Colonial Revival. However, these pieces don’t need to be heavy and dark. They can be covered in bright contemporary fabrics or painted a fun and unexpected color. Look for symmetry when decorating in the Traditional style – pairs of easy chairs, groupings of candlesticks, and artwork hung in twos or threes all add elegance.
How can Window Treatments work with the Traditional Style?
Window treatments are key to achieving Traditional style. Billowing floor to ceiling drapes in a bold fabric and traditional color frame a window beautifully. Valances and curtains can also be fashioned from any material and can really pull the room together. And of course, don’t forget about shutters, shades, and blinds. These can all be used in combination with curtains or drapes or on their own. At The Louver Shop you can find plenty of great window coverings that will work with a Traditional style room. For instance Café Style shutters by Heritage are perfect for privacy in a traditional bedroom but still let in light and allow a view. Heritage Diamond Select shutters come in many sizes and shapes and work well on the arched windows found in many traditional homes. Averte Natural Fold Shades can be given a classic, traditional touch by adding tassled trim. These are stunning in a dining room or kitchen. The team at The Louver Shop can help you pull it all together with the perfect fabric, wood stain, paint color, trim and cornices. Get started designed your Traditional home or room today!
What Colors and Fabrics Work Well with Traditional Style?
Traditional style typically relies on a vibrant color palette. French blue, leaf green, and rosy red all are often found in a Traditional home. This doesn’t mean you need to stay away from neutrals. In fact, when you are using such warm, deep colors, neutrals work really well alongside them. For instance, if you paint your walls in one of these colors, then white furniture looks stunning against the backdrop. Try to keep a palette of half color/half neutral so that your room is eye catching not overwhelming. As for fabrics, bold prints are wonderful. Look for bigger prints. Gingham, stripes, and even florals are all available in larger sizes. The bigger scale gives the fabric an updated feel and keeps everything dressy but simple. In the bedroom go for lots of textured fabric – you want a luxurious look and feel. Tapestry and damask type fabrics are perfect. Don’t be afraid to use fringe, beading, and swags on your fabrics and furniture in any room. Again a touch here and there is all that is needed.
What Kind of Accents are Traditional?
The Traditional home typically has lots of trim and detailing. You’ll find baseboards, chair rails, wainscoting, and crown molding. Everywhere you look there is something to draw your eye. For this reason, you don’t usually need a lot of accents. You don’t want your look to cross the line into fussy! However, a vintage plate here and there or two or three silver candlesticks look wonderful. Look for flea market and antique shop finds to mix in with your family treasures. Also, fresh flowers in old fashioned vases always look gorgeous in a Traditional room.
